What is the Executive Internship Program?
The Executive Internship Program (EIP) is a unique and prestigious opportunity offered exclusively to Recorded Music majors in The Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at New York University who have a demonstrated interest and commitment to executive training.
Students who are accepted into EIP will have the unique opportunity to complement their academic coursework by gaining hands-on executive training and exposure to all facets of a music company’s operation by interning at either The Warner Music Group or Sony Music.
In a traditional internship, a student works in only one area of a record label. In contrast, each EIP student will, in conjunction with their employer, design a work program uniquely suited to their career interests. This may entail working in a minimum of 3 and as many as 6 different departments/groups at the company and across different labels within the company over the course of several semesters. In the process, students will be able to observe firsthand what it takes to build and run a successful global music company today.
And while all Recorded Music students are required to present a senior level Capstone project to faculty and industry professional as a condition to their graduation from the program, EIP students will also have exclusive opportunities to receive in-depth feedback on their projects from top-level executives at the company.
Who can apply for EIP?
Students accepted into EIP must have completed their sophomore year at Recorded Music. As a condition to participating in EIP, students must dedicate a minimum of 2 consecutive semesters, though, subject to the conditions noted below, they may remain in the program for as long as 4 consecutive semesters.
Eligibility requirements for EIP will be extremely competitive: students must have demonstrated an interest and competency in the music business, academically and professionally. To apply for the program, students must have maintained a high GPA, and to remain in the program, students must sustain this level of academic excellence.
How does EIP work?
As noted above, Students who are accepted into EIP will be required to commit to a minimum of two (2) consecutive semesters. A performance review will be conducted for each EIP student at the end of each department rotation. A full performance review will be conducted toward the end of their second academic semester.
• Students participating in EIP may begin as soon as Spring 2008 (or their participation may start in the summer session.) The first week will be orientation. (i.e. Former interns, Executive Sessions, Office Training).
• Each student will be assigned an Executive Mentor based on interests/goals. Mentor will oversee development during their time in EIP.
• Students will have the option of working during holidays.
• Mentor/General Manager will review and evaluate Capstone Project
Students are also expected to submit themselves to the rigorous work environment and high performance standards required at the companies. Accordingly, students will be required to work, at minimum, 20 hours each work week. Over the course of the summer, EIP students have the option of working on a full time basis. Students will be required to provide their own transportation to and from work, as well as their own meals during the workday.
How do I apply?
Students must apply to the program formally through the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music and undergo an interview process at the companies before being accepted into the program. Students should expect to begin the program in their Spring 2008 semester.
Students may pick up an application from Lauren Davis, Internship Faculty Coordinator, at 194 Mercer Street, Room 515.
